Silk Tie Easter Eggs
What you need
- One dozen eggs
- Glass or enamel pot (not metal)
- Silk ties, scarves, shirts, or boxers
- White sheets, white cloth napkins, or white socks
- Rubber bands or twist ties
- Water
- 6 tablespoons of white vinegar
- Tongs
Directions
- Cut the backside of silk ties to get large flat pieces. Discard the tie filling and cut silk into squares large enough to cover one egg.
- Wrap each raw egg with silk, keeping the darker printed side facing the egg.
- Secure each wrapped egg with a rubber band or twist tie.
- Insert silk-wrapped eggs into white baby socks or wrap with white cloth material, securing with rubber bands if needed.
- Place wrapped eggs in enamel pot, cover with water, and add 6 tablespoons of vinegar.
- Bring water to a boil, reduce heat, and simmer for 20 minutes (use 25 minutes if planning to eat the eggs).
- Remove eggs with tongs and let cool on a rack.
- Remove white wrapping and silk to reveal the dyed pattern.
Tips: Use only real silk (polyester won't work). You get about 3 usable pieces per tie. Wrinkles and white lines in the silk create part of the pattern. You can use blown-out eggs to save year after year. Alternative silk sources include scarves, blouses, and boxers.
