Three Ingredient Healthier Bagels

Easy bagel recipe made with non-fat yogurt and flour. No yeast, no boiling and they can easily be made vegan and gluten-free as well. Scroll down for the recipe!

Below are the ingredients I use.

3 Ingredient Healthier Bagels

** Think of these as a healthier bagel in that they are baked, not fried and made with non-fat yogurt. If using plain full fat Greek yogurt they will have a different nutritional value **

Ingredients

1 ¾ cup Self-Rising Flour

1 cup non-fat plain Greek Yogurt (See notes on what you can use) I use Siggi’s Non-fat High Protein yogurt

To coat: You can use either butter, egg yolk, egg white, or milk. One of these MUST be brushed on the bagel or the seasoning will not stick. 

Toppings

1 tablespoon of Trader Joe’s Everything But The Bagel Seasoning or poppyseeds

Directions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine self-rising flour and yogurt.

  2. Stir with a silicone spatula to combine, then grease your hands with the same yogurt and knead the dough until it forms a soft elastic ball. The dough will be sticky. Add 1/8 cup more of yogurt if your dough is too dry.

  3. Divide the dough into 4 balls. Grease your hands with more yogurt and roll each ball into a small log. Don’t over knead the dough. It doesn’t need to be perfectly smooth. Twist into a bagel shape and pinch and both ends. You may brush with melted butter or an egg wash at this point if you want them to be golden brown. Sprinkle with everything seasoning.

  4. Grease the air fryer basket or tray generously with avocado spray as they will stick!

  5. Air fry at 350°F (180°C) for 12-15 minutes (on the middle rack if using an oven shaped air fryer) or bake in oven for 20-24 minutes or until slightly brown at the very top. ** If you brush with butter or an egg wash they will be a little more brown all over, otherwise they will bake very pale since we are not frying **

  6. Remove the bagels from the air fryer and let cool for two minutes. Cut, add cream cheese, toast them, or make into an egg sandwich. Enjoy!

    ** Tips:

    To make homemade self-rising flour: combine 2 cups all-purpose flour, 1 tablespoon baking powder, and 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt.

    Use strained thick Greek yogurt only: Try not to use those that are labeled "Greek style" yogurt as they have more liquid. My preferred brands are: Fage Total 0% Greek Yogurt and Stonyfield non-fat Greek Yogurt. If there is any liquid in your yogurt, it should be drained before using.

    If saving the bagels store in an airtight container in the fridge and microwave for 20 seconds in the morning.
